George P. Carras,

For more than 25 years, George has held positions
in higher education as faculty member, academic administrator,
college dean, development director, and sponsored-research
director. Besides serving for seven years as a faculty member,
dean, academic tutor, and director of studies at
Oxford
University, he was, for three years, the Denyer Johnson Scholar
and the Hall-Houghton Research Scholar. He was a postdoctoral
research fellow at the
University
of
California, Berkeley, in the Near Eastern Studies Department and pursued
further studies at the Universities of Cambridge,
Zurich
and
Vienna. At W&L, George also holds the positions of
associate provost and professor of classical studies (Department
of Classics) and senior research fellow in religion (Department
of Religion). In
addition, he has served as an adviser to the Cairo Genizah
Project at
Cambridge. He has presented or published 24 academic papers or
articles primarily in the field of early Christianity (Pauline
studies) and ancient Judaism (Josephus studies). He has two
books to be published, by Oxford University Press and Brill
Academic Publishers,
Leiden, The Netherlands. George has degrees from the University
of California, Berkeley (B.A.), University of Manchester,
England
(M.A.), and the
University
of
Oxford
(D.Phil.).
George

A
former reporter, editorial writer and editor for metropolitan
newspapers in Connecticut and Kentucky, George has worked for or
with colleges and universities for the past decade — first as
executive director of the Kentucky Center for Public Issues, then as
senior associate at Kentucky's coordinating council for
postsecondary education, and most recently as director of strategic
communication at Mary Baldwin College in Staunton, Virginia. George taught writing and editing to upper-level students at the
University of Kentucky and was a producer and the host of an
award-winning public-affairs radio program in Louisville, Kentucky.
He has a bachelor's degree from Trinity College in Hartford,
Connecticut, and earned a master's degree in management from
Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute as a Corporate Fellow at its
Hartford campus. He was a Knight-Wallace Fellow in journalism at the
University of Michigan and has studied at Smith College in
Northampton, Massachusetts, the University of Louisville, and in
Rome, Italy.

As As
assistant director of corporate and foundation relations and faculty
grants, Jane is primarily responsible for faculty grant support and
institutional initiatives in the arts, humanities, and social
sciences. As a faculty grants director,
she oversees efforts
to assist faculty with individual research and fellowship
applications. Jane also serves as a
special-project liaison, collaborating with established and emerging
programs on campus in researching and pursuing funding opportunities
and designing and drafting proposals.
Jane graduated from Columbia University (B.A.), where she
majored in comparative literature, working in French, Italian and
Spanish literature. While at Columbia, she was awarded the Murrarow Prize for
excellence in cultural studies. Before coming to Washington and Lee
as a member of the office of communications in 2004, she worked in
the independent film industry in New York City.
Frank A.

Frank
has been professor of chemistry at Washington and Lee since 1998
after a long career in a similar position at Virginia Military
Institute. He has taught courses in analytical chemistry and
directed a seminar on the development, use and legacy of nuclear
weapons. Before joining W&L, Frank was a program director
for chemistry in the Division of Undergraduate Education at the
National Science Foundation and a consultant to the Department of
Energy. He received a B.S. in chemistry from Emory and
Henry
College
and a Ph.D. in chemistry from the University
of
Tennessee
at
Knoxville.
Frank has
been honored with the prestigious J. Calvin Giddings Award for
Excellence in Education, given by the Division of Analytical
Chemistry of the American Chemical Society to one person a year who
has made an outstanding contribution to the “personal and
professional development of students in the study of analytical
chemistry.” With foundation funding, Settle and Politics Professor
Robert Strong conducted the 2005 Summer Institute on Teaching
Nonproliferation (of nuclear weapons) that drew instructors from the
United
States
and beyond.

An Oregon native
and graduate of Brigham Young University, Heidi held a variety of
positions in several businesses - software tester, customer-service
representative, and billing coordinator for a radiology practice -
before coming to W&L.
