Eighteen university teachers will participate in Manila's intensive, four-week, residential American Studies Summer Institutes.  The theme of the 2004 Institute is "The American Electoral Process:  Then and Now."  The Institute involves teaching a course, "The American Electoral Process:  Contemporary Issues," which will look at recent efforts to reform the electoral process and campaign finance, the use of recall to replace elected officials at the state and local levels, the 2000 Presidential election, changing demographics, the role of special interest groups, and the effect of gender, race, and religion on elections.  In addition, the participant will be a featured speaker in a two-day international conference on "Elections."
