Julie Woodzicka Research
has found that women smile more often than do men. The
particular smile that women display is called a non-Duchenne (or
false) smile. However, little is known about whether women are
aware of displaying this smile, and if they are, what they believe
the function or outcome of non-Duchenne smiling will be. This
summer an undergraduate student and myself will run a lab study to
test the following: 1) whether women are aware of their
smiling behavior, 2) what the perceived function/outcome of the non-Duchenne
smile is, and 3) when and why men in low power positions display
this type of smile.
