Jim Warren -- Huntington Library Fellowship

This fellowship is for a month of research at the Huntington Library in San Marino, California. Warren will be researching for his book project, "American Pastoralism, 1865-1920: Burroughs, Muir, and Austin."  The Huntington is the main repository of letters and manuscripts of Mary Austin, a California nature writer of the early twentieth century. In addition, it has an important collection of materials by John Burroughs, the central figure in his new project, including the notebooks written during the Harriman Alaska Expedition of 1899. Finally, the Library has 174 letters in its John Muir collection. The materials will allow Jim to take a fresh look at the correspondence between Muir and Burroughs. Other materials he will consult include the manuscripts of Henry Thoreau and Emerson's manuscript of the 1862 eulogy for Thoreau. His project focuses on the influence of Emerson, Thoreau, and Whitman on Muir, Burroughs, and Austin. Finally, the Library contains the papers of several minor figures, such as Charles Keeler, Charles Lummis, Melville Anderson, and Ina Coolbrith, and letters by important editors such as Robert Underwood Johnson and Richard Watson Gilder. In sum, the Huntington Library is a major repository for archival materials relating to Professor Warren's new book project.
